Where Is Gstaad and How Do You Reach It?

Gstaad sits in the Saanen valley in the canton of Bern at an altitude of around 1,050 metres. It is surrounded by mountains and connected to the outside world by a single road through the valley and a narrow-gauge mountain railway called the Golden Pass Line.

There is no motorway to Gstaad. The approach roads are beautiful but winding, especially from the Jaun Pass to the east or the Col du Pillon to the southwest. In winter, these mountain passes can be closed by snow. Knowing the correct route and having a driver who has driven it before is not optional. It is essential.

The nearest major airports are Geneva Airport at around 2 hours by car and Zurich Airport at around 2.5 to 3 hours. Bern Airport is closer at around 1.5 hours but handles fewer international flights.

Why Self-Driving to Gstaad Is Not Always Wise

Many visitors to Gstaad arrive via Geneva or Zurich and rent a car. This can work in summer when roads are clear. In winter, however, the mountain roads to Gstaad require proper winter tyres, experience with alpine driving, and knowledge of which passes are open. A wrong turn in poor weather can add an hour or more to the journey, or worse.
